Woodlands Village Dentistry Highlights Root Canal Care for Patients

Flagstaff, Arizona, September 15, 2026 - Root canal treatment remains one of the most effective ways to stop severe tooth pain and save a natural tooth, rather than resorting to extraction. Woodlands Village Dentistry, a Flagstaff dentist, continues to see patients dealing with sudden, severe tooth pain and wants residents to know this option is available.

Why Root Canals Matter for Emergency Dental Care in Flagstaff

Tooth pain is one of the most common reasons patients seek urgent dental treatment. According to the CDC, tooth disorders accounted for an annual average of nearly 1.94 million emergency department visits nationwide between 2020 and 2022. Many of these visits stem from infections that a root canal could have resolved earlier, before pain became severe enough to require emergency room care.

"When a patient comes in with sudden, throbbing tooth pain, a root canal is often the fastest way to remove the infection and relieve the pressure causing that pain," said Dr. Elliot Martich of Woodlands Village Dentistry. "Our goal is to give Flagstaff patients a same-day option so they can get relief here, in a dental chair, instead of waiting hours in an emergency room."

What Happens During a Root Canal

Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, then cleans, fills, and seals the space to prevent further infection. A crown is often added afterward to restore strength, particularly for back teeth used in chewing. The procedure typically takes one to two visits and is performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the area before treatment begins.

Recognizing the Warning Signs Early

Dr. Martich noted that patients often wait too long to seek care because early symptoms can seem minor. Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, pain when chewing or applying pressure, swelling limited to the gum around a single tooth, a tooth that gradually darkens, and a small bump on the gum are among the clearest signs that a tooth's inner pulp may be infected. Brief sensitivity that fades quickly is normal, but pain that lingers for 30 seconds or longer usually points to nerve inflammation. A tooth that turns gray or dark can signal dead internal tissue even without any pain at all, which is why patients are encouraged not to dismiss subtle changes.

Expanding Access as an Emergency Dentist in Flagstaff

Woodlands Village Dentistry has structured its scheduling to accommodate patients experiencing sudden dental pain, swelling, or signs of infection. As an emergency dentist in Flagstaff, the practice prioritizes same-day evaluations for patients whose symptoms suggest an infection may be spreading, reducing the likelihood that those patients will need to seek care at a hospital emergency room instead.

"Waiting on a toothache rarely makes it better," Dr. Martich added. "The sooner we can evaluate the tooth, the more likely we are able to save it with a root canal instead of an extraction."
